The Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) shares, develops and conserves the Irish National Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art. Since 2014, we have worked with many internal teams to develop the IMMA brand and communications, both physical and digital.
Situated in the historic surroundings of The Royal Hospital Kilmainham, we developed a sympathetic signage system that strikes a balance between helping the visitors navigate while giving them freedom to explore and wander. The wayfinding strategy analysed user journeys and key decision points, as well as consideration of the unique architecture, exhibition spaces, and facilities at IMMA. The dual language system also takes into account IMMA’s ongoing universal design and accessibility programme.
The IMMA online platform is the key access point for all audiences. We developed a versatile website to share the collection and promote their programmes and activities. This new site delivers on their mission to connect audiences and art and to share the National Collection now and in the future.
The bit you don’t see
The project followed a user-centric methodology and went through several rounds of testing and design iteration at every stage in the process, from concept and architecture to navigation and design. The website serves many purposes including, an information directory, an events calendar, an online gallery, an archive, a learning resource, an editorial journal and a shop. We worked with internal teams and external suppliers to unite this in one space, making much of IMMA’s growing collection available to view for many for the very first time. We developed a versatile CMS and image library making management, updates and promotion a straightforward process.
